NYC Haiku Traffic Signs

I just ran across this story on NPR, on how NYC is using Haiku street signs to educate biker, cars and pedestrians.

Traffic warning street signs written as haiku are appearing on poles around the five boroughs, posted by the New York City Department of Transportation. The poems and accompanying artwork were created by artist John Morse.

While I certainly appreciate the attempt,  it's hard to appreciate the signs as muchhaving been a city biker for almost 6 years now. I can't tell you how many times I've been caught in sticky situations... almost all involving distracted drivers and/or impatient pedestrians. Much grittier versions of the colorful haiku signs above. Even today, I get a friendly reminder of a past car-on-bike hit and run every time I finish a hard swim or upper body workout thanks to lingering back problems.

Hopefully they'll work but, for now, I'm going to stay skeptical.
